Queen – They Rocked Us!
I had no idea Queen was formed in 1970! Then again, I was born in 1970 so would have relied on my brother to play their records for me. I know I heard them in the ‘80s and pretty well every week since.
Now that’s promotion! Come up with something people like and they will return to it again and again.
Queen was comprised of Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals), and John Deacon (bass). Their earliest works were influenced by progressive hard rock and heavy metal.
Before forming Queen, Brian May and Roger Taylor had played together in the band Smile. Freddie Mercury was a fan of Smile and encouraged them to experiment with more elaborate stage and recording techniques. He joined in 1970 and suggested the name “Queen.”
In 1975, “Bohemian Rhapsody” was born. Every time I hear this song, I think, “Who could even dream of such a song?” Do I know anyone in the last even 10 years that has written anything like that? No.
Queen was one of a kind.
I remember the Montreal Canadians winning those Stanley Cups, from 1976 to 1979, and hearing “We are the Champions” being played as they circled the ice with the cup. Out of all the millions of songs, “We are the Champions” became a sports anthem! Then came, “We Will Rock You” in 1977, and “Another One Bites the Dust” in 1980.
I am sure everyone saw their performance at “Live Aid” by now. I watched it over and over, many times. I would not have wanted to be the band to follow that performance!
Have you ever seen “Highlander?” I remember hearing “Who Wants to Live Forever,” performed by Queen. I’ve heard of some artists trying to do Queen songs, almost giving up before they started. Freddie was unique.How about “Under Pressure,” which had Freddy and David Bowie singing together? That was one amazing tag team!
Oh, and another favorite of mine, “Radio Gaga!”
Queen has been a global presence in popular culture for more than four decades. Estimates of their record sales are in the 300 million range, worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling music artists. In 1990, Queen received the Brit Award for “Outstanding Contribution to British Music.” Freddie passed not too long after this in 1991. They were inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and with each member having composed hit singles, all four were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2018 they were presented the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Queen was and always will be legendary.
They continue to perform with their new singer, Adam Lambert. On September 20, 2013, Queen + Adam Lambert performed at the iHeartRadio Music Festival at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The group then toured North America in the summer of 2014, Australia and New Zealand in August/September 2014. In an interview with Rolling Stone, May and Taylor said that although the tour with Lambert is a limited thing, they are open to him becoming an official member and creating new material with him.
Still performing together, on 4 June 2022, Queen + Adam Lambert opened the “Platinum Party” at the Palace outside Buckingham Palace, marking the Queen’s “Platinum Jubilee.” Performing a three-song set, they opened with “We Will Rock You,” which had been introduced in a comedy segment, where Queen Elizabeth II and Paddington Bear tapped their teacups to the beat of the song.
I spoke to one singer-songwriter last week who has seen Adam Lambert perform, and he spoke very highly of him as a singer and performer for Queen.
