Muhammad Ali
Float Like A Butterfly, Sting Like A Bee
Probably my favorite athlete of all time was, and will always be, Muhammad Ali. I can imitate people well that l like, and I can usually do a decent imitation of Muhammad.
“Joe will come out smoking and I ain’t going to be joking. I’ll be pecking and a poking, pouring water on his smoking, now this may shock and amaze you, but I will destroy Joe Frazier.”
A few of my favorite Muhammed Ali quotes include:
“I don’t count the sit-ups. I only start counting when it starts hurting because they’re the only ones that count. That’s what makes you a champion.”
“Don’t count the days. Make the days count.”
“Impossible is just a word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
And one of my favorites here:
“I’m so fast that last night I turned off the light switch in my hotel room and was in bed before the room was dark.”
Many movies and documentaries have covered this great man. In addition to his athletic skills, he was by far a great PR and Marketing man.
Ali knew the fundamentals.
Attract attention
No one did it better. Always in front of the cameras, coming up with great quotes as above, constant showmanship, flashy, fun.
Have a good product
He was the first to be 3-time, heavyweight champion.
Public Relations
Great PR, great Ambassador. He cared about helping people. He toured, did events, and donated time and money when he retired despite a debilitating disease.
Hard Work
He was a known hard worker behind the scenes. Between his great team and manager Angelo Dundee, they always did their homework and had a strategy.
An example is when he lost the first fight with Leon Spinks in 1978. Ali worked out very hard and came back to fight him again with a great strategy. Leon possessed something Ali didn’t see a lot of near the end of his career, which was hand speed. With his own hand speed now slower, Angelo and Ali came up with the “Shock him and Lock him strategy.” Meaning, Ali would hit him, accumulate the points and then lock him up with his arms before Leon, with his hand speed, could counter. Brilliant!
The result? A Unanimous decision for Ali, making him the first champion to win the heavyweight belt 3 times – despite being 37 years old vs Leon who was 24 years old. The Associated Press scored the fight 12–3 for Ali. The three judges for this championship match were all in favor of Ali, giving him a unanimous decision win.
Leon said two weeks after their second fight, “I congratulated Ali! He is still my idol.”– Leon Spinks
What can we take away from Muhammad Ali and immediately apply to our businesses?
Here is the answer:
Attract attention:
Make your presence known online. Be on all the maps, be in the top 10 spots, be in all the online directories. This is called aggressive SEO.
Get Google Ads posted in all your service areas.
Get Facebook Ads targeting your exact clients and areas.
Get Instagram Ads posted.
Do Social Media posts, not once in a while, but 5 days a week.
Get a real website made:
Why do I say a real one? Because most of the websites we scan are loaded with technical errors that search engines reject.
Market Research:
Survey to know what your clients and potential clients need from you and incorporate these into your advertising.
Do the hard work behind the scenes. Get a competitor analysis done so you know what you are up against. Don’t guess! That’s what costs money – guessing.
Have a great product or service:
Many companies have amazing products and services, but no one knows it! Help people with everything you do, and the money will come.
At DIT Web Solutions we partner with you to implement all of these points. Then your company can and will, “ Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.“
